This is the first glimpse of a community we finally think will do the things we want to do for musicians and visualists. And we need your help.
As of midnight July 25, 2012, we're off and running. This is the place to get started. Don't hesitate to ask questions, give us ideas or thoughts, report bugs, and get started chatting.
It may look a bit plain. It may surprise you if you were using Noisepages. But we feel we have a platform that fulfills our original goals. You'll find forum posts from Noisepages here. What you won't find is the spam that plagued that system. And the plainness here is a good thing - it gives us a tool with which we can add the things we need, rather than struggle to subtract things we don't.
That's all I'll say for now, as I want you to give this a try. But please, whatever you do - don't be shy.

like the look nice and clean with txt you can read nice job thxs for the help with login
Peter, Let me know how I can help you with "Create Digital Noise Forum"
Its a resource which I feel is long overdue
I run several SMF based forums, and have years of experience being Admin for music technology forums.
www.vguitarforums.com
www.futureguitarnow.com
Biggest issue today is being pro-active to prevent the forum being filled with SPAM, and moderating / splitting threads when they stray way too far off topic.
moderating is good some times but with years of running clans and forums and stuff some times it can get out of hand think some times its better to have a report button and let the admins sort it.thats my own view ..
I'd love to see topics about Arduinos, sensors, M4L, Blender, visual programming, programming visuals, talk about workshops and cultural events to name a few.
Every now and then i see a post about a workshop in a country near me and i get frustrated because some of this stuff is really hard to learn and it would be great to learn from the pro's.
Would be cool to have some kind of a workshop calendar or a list of learning resources in the web. Anyway i dont feel like there's too much of tech talk going on. With all of these new tools, it's hard work to keep up!
There's already forums for single products like M4L or C4D etc., so there probably shouldn't be more of those but something in between?? I dont know if there is a forum for... "Basics for combining electronics and programming for audio and visuals.", now there's a topic! From 3D printing to making music with Kinect, we've got stuff to talk about! :D
yes i want to start a topic on a yusynth i am building still early days at the moment but got 60% of parts i think ..so any input on stuff like that would be cool.
I think this is really a great move! And great choice on the forums script, vanilla is a great platform. Be sure to install some essential plugins like "mark all read", gravatar support (because avatars are nice), WYSIWYG editor (why go the hard way if we can have it nice and easy?) and "in this discussion" (plugin to see who is taking part)
Hi Peter,
I like the clean look as well, nice work! One possibly far reaching request... is support for markdown feasible? This would allow more intricate posts and it will be much easier to express ideas, then with plain text..
Ahah! It's already in there... I just didn't try, silly me. So then, I'm a totally happy camper!
Thanks again..
Yep, Markdown works! Actually, so I just need to modify the style for this entry form - then there will be a hint that it's there and a link to the reference.
papernoise, Gravatar is already on. Mark all read I can put on, if that's useful. WYSIWYG -- dunno, I rather prefer Markdown, but I'll see what that plug does.
Okay, "In This Discussion" and "Mark All Viewed" - wish granted.
CLEditor / wysiwyg - urgh, sorry, have to veto that one. Looks hideous. Let me work on making Markdown easier to use.
Actually, papernoise, maybe you know something about the best media handling? Long-term, we definitely want to support the most popular OEmbeds (SoundCloud, Vimeo, YouTube, etc.) - that might be a hackday project, though. ;)
I can understand your issues with WYSISWG...
Markdown works fine. Have you ever tried Textile? It's a bit more complete than markdown…
about media handling, I've got to set up a forum right now for a client, so I can look into this matters, I'll let you know what I find. You might be right though... could need a hackday project
This looks most promising: http://vanillaforums.org/addon/fileuploaddetect-plugin
-- in turn, a fork of this: http://vanillaforums.org/addon/fileupload-plugin
I think that's the basic functionality you might want.
Where we may have to go to our own development is in supporting the sorts of OEmbeds we like, SoundCloud and whatnot. Of course, I happen to live in the same city as SoundCloud, and lots of folks over there have been looking at this.
This was kind of the notion behind relaunching Noise, that we'd really look at best practices for how you communicate with open forum tools and connect to all these other social services.
I have used fileupload (the second one) and it works fine. That's also what they have over at the Mutable Instruments forums and it seems to work quite well there as well. Youtube embedding is already great! If you manage to get soundcloud working, then that's probably a good starting point for the forums. So far I don't know of any plugins handling either Soundcloud or Vimeo.
hey Peter Kim. I dig it. I like the way it seems a better extension of CDM than before. If it works better as a searchable resource for things like libpd then I'm all for it
A SoundCloud plugin would sound like a great way to test out OEmbed.
RSS - checking!
So, Arvid, it seems the template does resize images to fit.
+1 for the rss feed - before, I was receiving all messages to my gmail account and filtering them, but actually I would prefer having it in rss, and only getting email for things I explicitly subscribe too.
By the way, this text box looks heaps better. Excellent work so far..
I think we can do RSS - think it's also a plugin. Heh, we need a little Vanilla hackday in Berlin; betcha there are other folks - startups doing support, even - who might try it out! We could also pipe in non-Berliners like all the rest of y'all via The Internet.
I can't seem to figure out how to quickly inser images, markdown syntax doesn't seem to work... and didn't you add the upload plugin?
Apparently you get a lot of spam here. I suggest you change your security settings on vanilla... maybe introducing a simple security question for registering users.
