That's great, Richard. It's nice to see someone do a basic getting-started tutorial; this may be even easier for people to digest in one sitting than the Apple tutorial.
Here's one from O'Reilly, though it's even more basic (and arguably less interesting):
http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2006/03/23/quartz-composer.html
What I haven't seen is a comprehensive reference on learning (and actually using) Quartz Composer; I think it's because no one -- least of all Apple -- can really decide what this tool is supposed to be for. I'm not convinced it'll get any better in 10.5. But what I've been most impressed by is the ability to set up visualizations using a modular approach (even more so than in Jitter, really), and at the advanced end, the ability to get right into the Core Image kernel code and build your own theaters with very little fuss. The simplicity of that and the resulting optimized performance doesn't have any direct equivalent in any other app.
The other good news for Jitter fans is that you'll be able to use QC filters (which is what I find it best at, really) directly in Jitter 1.6. I haven't tried this yet, though.
Have you worked with QC at all, incidentally?
Once I'm done with this class I'm teaching on QC, and having seen people's reactions, I may try again to write up my own instructional materials. |
