Hello All,
I am looking for a WWW audio host to use in conjunction with my website. I have been wading through google results and keep coming up with the same lousy sites: tons of ads and indirect routes to the uploaded content. I figured some of you have been trough this before and could point me in an appropriate direction. I need a clean and direct way for my visitors to access sound samples of the devices i make. Preferably the audio would be in .mp3 or .wav format. Ideally the host would offer direct or 'hot' linking, tons of storage space and bandwidth, and maybe even an embeddable player. Also I dont really have a website development budget so all that for free would be great too.
Thanks for any reccomendations.
And since this is my first post on these boards I would like to add that I have been reading CDM/CDN for a long time now and it has been a great source of information and inspiration as I have been exploring circuit bending and digital music in general for the past two years or so. Keep up the good work.
Thank you,
FauxAudio

You know, I've been wondering exactly that myself and hadn't come up with anything good.
That said, it wouldn't be too hard to just roll your own solution. We're using a Flash audio plug-in on CDM now that automatically makes those little players when it sees a link to that file type ... can look that up if you want, but if you're running WordPress you'll see a handful of good choices on the codex.
And for storage, you could just go with Amazon S3, which is super-cheap but high-performance storage from Amazon. In fact, if everyone else comes up dry, this may be exactly what I do with my stuff.
But maybe someone else knows -- kind of like a blip.tv / vimeo for *audio*?

| Well Im not using WordPress, at least not right now. I need to do some more research on it first. The plug-in at CDM is nice indeed. Is CDM running on WordPress? I'll check out Amazon as well. Thanks. |

CDM is indeed running WordPress.
Speaking of embeddable players, though, Yahoo just opened up the code for their embeddable Flash player. So that's worth a look, too. (In fact, I'd better have a look at it!)
Good luck; keep us posted! Dig the icon. |

Wow, this is also super easy to use.
http://developer.yahoo.net/blog/archives/2008/01/post.html
1. Link to MP3s in your web page. These can be anywhere on the web.
2. Add a line of code to insert our Javascript library. We host this, so you just have to point to our URL.
3. Working play buttons appear next to MP3s.
del.iicio.us did something like this, but the Yahoo player is more functional.
Yeah, I think just upload the file somewhere -- honestly, on whoever hosts your site is probably perfectly fine -- and use an embeddable player like this.
And because the links are to *files* you could always change the player to something else if you choose, whereas if they're on some service somewhere, you can't. |

I've been using Twango to host (and post) my audio. They're a youtube clone run by Nokia, the difference being that you can upload audio and still images and then use their embeddable player to post it wherever.
It's a little kludgy but works okay, and they do the hosting so your bandwidth doesn't get eaten. |

Thanks for the suggestions - many things to consider. Twango and Yahoo (of all places) may work out as I am not sure I want to make the leap into WordPress right now. Dont know enough about it yet, and I just need basic content management (not necessairily blog format).
Whats the url to your site machaeluna? id like to see Twango in action.
If anyone has more suggestions keep em coming.... |

Peter, the Amazon S3 storage, is it reliable, backed up and secure. I currently store my masters on sets ofd DVD's and an external HD, but i would like to store them in a safe a reliable online repository..
Cheers

The issue is mainly that there's no money to be made in letting people people directly link to audio files for free. Generally, you either have to live with the ads, or be willing to pay a bit of money for something unobtrusive. |

Well, jury's still out about whether linking to video free will make money, but that's another story.
But I could see cheap rather than free. People happily pony up for the Pro accounts on Flickr, for instance. (I've got two.) And that's where -- given what other people are saying about music bandwidth consumption -- paying Amazon a few cents for S3 could really make sense. Likewise, I could imagine another provider building a service on top of S3 for music, as has happened with a number of things. The cost equation is really changing. |

Hello.
As I mentionned on the blog, alonetone just launched, which is a free, non-commercial, no advertisement service built on top of S3.
Check it out and let me know what you think. It's bare-bones, aiming to just do one thing right - make it easy to upload and share music without the need for a company.

Individuals who has good traffic don't really benefit from s3. If you just have to store huge amounts of data which is not accessed often, then you should go for S3. A good shared hosting provider like DreamHost provides reliability and since they oversell bandwidth, you get way more bandwidth for $10/mo. than you would get from S3.
Anyway, if you do decide to go with S3 and decide to sell your mp3 as well, then try "Brad Sucks Digital Delivery Store" script (http://www.bradsucks.net/projects/bsdds/) |
