Hey fellas, I've been using Live for my productions but I always felt like it could sound a lot more crisp. Reason never quite had enough punch or clarity. And the synths sucked. So after listening to a lot of artists who use Logic I'm convinced of its superiority. Only thing is I've heard the learning curve is either a horrible bitch or really intuitive. So which is it? And do you guys think that it will satisfy the search for the perfect sound, at least for a little while?

I'd also be interested in people weighing in on this. It seems that it's either Logic or Cubase for any kind of "pro" setup. I always hear that these programs are worth the switch, but it's always hard to switch from your comfort zone. I'm still stuck with FLStudio (i know i know! don't hit me...), and people keep telling me to just make the switch.

So any advice on switching sequencers (in terms of habits, workflows, guides, etc), would also be appreciated.

I think your VST plugins, samples and recording setup/gear would have a lot more to do with the overall "crispiness" than your DAW... not that there aren't merits to switching DAWs, but most of those merits would be about workflow and features right? I mean when it comes to audio recording and midi/softsynths, digital is digital (speaking outside of DAW-specific effects and plugins). Provided you're using the same plugins and gear in Logic, Cubase etc... it should sound the same as Live.

Usually when I'm looking to get a "new sound" I start hunting for plugins, samples and gear. I look for a new DAW (or more generally alternative methods of control and sequencing) when I get bored of my current environment.

Thanks te2rx. This is a very good point as it is primarily Live's FX that I'm fed up with. I don't like Operator either. I'm really drawn to Logic because of the drum sound modeling capabilities and the synths are supposed to be quality too. I think I like the idea of having a self contained, all in one program for the best work flow possible. I like the way Reason feels a lot more than how Live feels. I'm going to sleep on what you said though, I hadn't really thought of just upgrading the plugins and instruments...

It's not the tools, it's the user.

well, and it's the tools... your output comes from the relationship between you and your tools. If you change your tools, you'll change your output. If you suggest he should instead "change himself", sometimes that means getting away from the setup you've grown too accustomed to. I've seen people change DAWs or explore alternative sequencing methods for that reason. Or hell, even just musicians gathering exotic instruments and so on

maybe try using microsoft sound recorder. it's amazing what you can do with reversing and slowing down the sounds of random noises.

not really. but i'm a big fan of reason. i just like having the ability to fully customize my synths to get them how i want. i never feel limited in that aspect.

I LOVE using Thor, it's a such great synth. I can get some crazy stuff out of it.

If you like Thor, you should really check out Zebra:

It's one hell of a synth.

I'm just saying if you find yourself lacking, don't blame the tools. Just because a certain artists uses xyz, doesn't mean you will sound like them when you use xyz.

So by that logic, I should be able to produce music with Garage band by itself that will sound as good as a track mastered in Pro Tools with Pluggo vsts?

Although your analogy is extreme, I will stand by what I'm saying.

If you're that good with Garage Band and know how to bend it to do what you want it to do... yes.

If you dedicate yourself to something, you can push it to its limits. Of course, some people see challenge where others see limitations. Tools provide framework for artistic expression, and IMO don't equate to quality of the produced work. Just look at that video from Antartic research scientists. Thats some beautiful shit...does it mean it came from the most advanced software/hardware?

Just look at this guy!!! Wink
