For me the most accessible graphics software for musicians has got to be Arkaos VJ - it allows you to assign graphics, FX, and movie clips to MIDI keys and then play them as you would an audio instrument.

The latest version is Mac/PC compatible and even supports freeframe plug ins.

check it out @ http://www.arkaos.net

Cheers,
Marco

Arkaos looks really nice; they've added a lot of functionality lately and it's definitely worth a look.

While it's a little more streamlined in its feature set, I'm also fond of Motion Dive .tokyo, which also has a really, really nice piece of hardware. I'm holding out to get deep into it while I work on two things: 1. building a machine capable of running higher-res video live and 2. hacking the Flash files in Motion Dive so I can build my own. Wink

We've talked about doing a roundup. It's really personal, what you want to do with it.

Got a reel of your stuff in Arkaos, Marco?

Yes, I'll be happy to help you crack into the Motion Dive servers.

No, I won't, in this or any other case. If you're looking for free software, there are legal free options. Check out the list here:

. . . or see related free/open source discussions on this forum.

Wait a minute, Jaymis -- request for PIRATE software? Now, we definitely won't support pirated software, but I wouldn't mind getting a decent ship out to the Caribbean and running PirateOffice Professional 2006 Tropical Edition. It's the intuitive way to keep track of your plunder.

Ooooh, PIRATE software! If you come up with something along those lines, I'm sure that your can make a tax-deductible contribution to the FSM church!

Arkaos took forever to get v3.5 out, which had simple but needed features like stopping after one playthrough of a clip, and the ability to create/install new effects. I'm pretty disappointed with the way they treated those of us waiting, as if we were jerks for asking why they were months past their release date. I know release dates are never sacred, but why be a-holes about it? Especially when I've given you $350?

Other than that, it is a very approachable program, great for people who are just beginning or have limited VJ needs. I only wish GRID for XP had been out, because all I really needed was semi-advanced clip triggering at the time, not cube-wipes and psychedelic color effects.

the links, should anyone be confused:

Arkaos is quite nice, as is Resolume ([url=http://resolume.com/]) which also has a MIDI feature, and also a DMX interface to link up to lighting rigs for totally synchronised performances. Haven't used MotionDive, but I know people who have and they all give it the thumbs up too.

I see that there hasn't been much action here in some time but I'm sort of new at this and just trying to learn as much as I can.

From what I can tell Arkaos is one of the most widely used apps for controlling video through MIDI, since the last posting of this topic has that changed? I see some other names tossed around. Resolume as I see here, also Livid Union. What kind of features or limitations should I see between these different programs?
