OK, I figure I should start the first thread in the Retro area since I run a retro blog. Smile

The Prophet64 site now has photos of their new Commodore 64 cartridge that comes loaded with 4 SID music apps (including a snazzy new sequencer). Looks like the price will be a mere $50. I hope they sell a truckload.

My question to all of you: what is your favorite affordable retro music system?

LSDj...

The application is really well designed, quite intuitive for a tracker, and the soft is very deep, even though it's easy to produce some "basic" and very entertaining sounds out of it. And the gameboy sounds, even though they can sometimes be too easy to spot and recognize, are most of the time a pleasure to my ear Smile.

Johan (the developper) is a musician and created LSDj to use it and to make it available to other musicians, and it shows...

I'm a big fan of the ancient Korg and Roland synths of the early 80s. On the Korg side I had a Poly6 I cut my teeth on in my first band. I later had a Juno60 and a JX8P from Roland.

I also loved the Akai samplers (I still own an X7000 [on a side note here I need 2.5" QuickDiscs - if anyone has a stash I'll pay top dollar]) and the Akai AX60(?) I believe it was called was a great synth in its day that a friend had.

I just preordered the hotly anticipated Korg K25 controller that comes with the M1 LE software synth version of the Korg M1. I've been eyeing that Korg Legacy Collection they have had out for about a year that has the Poly6 and WAVESTATION along with another even older polysynth from Korg.

If you buy the K series controllers you get the M1 softsynth and special upgrade pricing for the Legacy Collection. Within a couple of months I will have a fairly complete collection of Korg instruments to pair with my old DSM1 rack sampler.

I've always wanted to get my hands on that really strange synthesizer/FM radio/casette player hybrid with a microphone in the aeriel ever since I first read that post, as well as that 1950's drum machine, which were both sold on eBay auctions. What novelties!

See, now people love their Wavestations. I know some who scoffed when Korg released that collection. (I'll still opt for the analog version, but I get the point.)

I really love a classic Game Boy + Nanoloop (instead of LSDj -- I prefer Nano's simplicity). But I don't think you can top the C64, honestly. Any advice for picking up a used system?

Or there's always the PCI card SID . . .

That Prophet64 looks really nice, may hit ebay and see if i can pick up a Commodore on the cheap. I've scoured the net for a LSDj cart for sale but had no luck, and Nanoloop looks really nice but I'm not sure if I'd like it. However I'm planning to get the Nintendo DS Lite which should be coming out in a month or two. Thinkin of putting Nitro tracker on it, looks cool and the use of the touchscreen would make it just plain kickass. Hopefully that will handle my mobile production needs, just waiting for the DS Lite. I hate waiting, alot.

If you're looking for a mobile music production device, consider buying a (recent) Palm + Bhajis Loops :

And for LSDj, GB carts are frequently available here (not always though) :

Neat ideas. The Bhajis Loops stuff is really cool, and I have a soft spot in my heart for 1980s "cheapo" instruments like the Korg Poly 6, the Sequential Six Trak, and even the Ensoniq Mirage.

My current "retro" crush isn't really that old. I've discovered that you can now buy Creamware Scope/Pulsar DSP boards extremely inexpensively. I've built myself a cheapo machine that houses three of the cheapest Scope Home cards, linked using their proprietary digital cable.

The lead designer for many of the Creamware softsynths was John Bowen, who was employee number two of Sequential Circuits. he also offers some amazing Scope-based synths through his Zarg Music site.

The result is a 9 DSP system that cost me less than $400, plus another 98 euros to upgrade to the latest Scope 4.5 software (which includes about 11 useful softsynths, an STS sampler, and a bunch of respectable fx).

I'm definitely looking at a Prophet 64 for some of my projects. I had a 64 when I was younger and have a thing for chip sounds. My other (new) favorite toy is my x0xb0x. It's a fun little toy.

That x0xbox is quite snazzy. Little expensive for me to get and drip solder all over. I did manage to pick up a fully funtional gameboy color yesterday for free. I think I'll grab Nanoloop, or LSDj if I can catch one for sale. Then I'll be happy, just need something to take to work for the down time. Don't wanna buy a Palm or nothin cuz I work at a steel mill and it'd just get ruined.
