I'll be that guy that asks it first, its always the first question we ask each other when ordering beers at the bar - What's In Your Rig?
Mine:
- Dell Inspiron 9200 1.6Ghz Pentium M 1GB Ram/ 80 GB internal HD/ 100 GB external HD
- Lexicon Omega USB MIDI/Audio Interface 1x1 MIDI/2 XLR/8 TRS/ 1 Stereo Pair 1/4" TRS Out/1x1 SPDIF/1 1/4" Stereo Headphone out
- MOTU Micro Express 4 in 6 out Patchbay/Interface (old parallel port interface, I now use this as a patchbay feeding the single In/Out of the Omega)
- Cubase LE
- General Instruments S3 Turbo Workstation (best full size monster I ever bought)
- Akai X7000 Sampler
- Korg DSM1 Rackmount Sampler
- Roland JV8000 module
- Roland Sound Canvas module
Over in the retro thread I discussed the new Korg K series controllers come with the new M1 LE softsynth which will be my first real foray into softsynths. I intend to follow up with a purchase of the Korg Legacy Collection.
What are some of you using softsynth-wise and what are your impressions of working with them? I'm new to this whole thing and I am trying to make smart buys at first to get into the swing of things. |

-VPR Matrix (an off-brand that used to be offered by Best Buy, dirt cheap) 1.8gHz P4, 1GB RAM, 80GB/300GB HDDs, Audiophile 2496
-iBook G4 400mHz, 384MBs RAM, 10GB HDD, 200GB external HDD (used for handling MIDI)
-DIGI 001
-Yamaha FB-01
-2x M-Audio Oxygen 8
-4x Alesis SR-16
-8x Shure SM-57
-Behringer MDX4600
-Technics RS-1520 (R2R recorder)
-Teleo Multi I/O module
-an old 12-channel, 100 foot snake I picked up at an auction
-a bunch of pre-amps gutted from other equipment
-a wealth of stomp boxes
-more instruments than I could ever learn to properly play in my lifetime
Eh, gets the job done.
I use Finale for sequencing, Ableton as my DAW, and Reason as my soft-synth. I love the Subtractor and Malstrom synths in Reason, they sound great when sent out through an effects chain or even straight to tape. |

I think I will take the cake for most-mocked, but here it is anyway, just so the rest of the people who are too poor to buy real gear don't have to feel like they're all alone out there.
Apple PowerMac G5 Dual
Behringer BCR2000
Korg padKontrol
Ableton Live (demo version)
Pd
...and Jack to get Pd sound into Live
I also have a cheap electric guitar and a mid-range flute. Lack of funds doesn't make it any less fun, though! |

I can relate, everything except the laptop (thanks Dell Credit Dept!) I bought used for cheap or on serious sale somewhere. The good news is these days deals are to be had everywhere - even for the brokest of us out there.
PS: Addendum to the list above I left out:
- Samson CO1U USB Condenser mic (brilliant mic, USB powered, perfect for mobile use)
- 1x SM57 instrument mic (used to mic an old family organ)
- 3x SM58 handheld mic
- 1x SM10 headset mic
- 1x EV handheld mic
- Behringer 12 channel Eurorack 1212 mixer |

Out of curiosity, what is the strategy behind using 4 Alesis SR16 machines? I used to own one and loved it, but I think I will probably get either the MAudio USB pad controller or the the new Korg one to replace the cheap Zoom Drum machine I inherited from a friend. |

Ha! This'll be amusing. The laptop's power, it is too much!
Dell Inspiron 7100 (4 gig hard drive, 300-odd MB of RAM, cutting edge Celeron 366MHz)
Tascam US-122
Nintendo DS w/ Electroplankton
My bass rig is a bit more interesting:
GK400RB IV
Line 6 DL4 looper
MXR M-80 Bass DI+ (distortion and EQ)
DOD FX25B Envelope
Rebuilt Yamaha BB404 jazz bass |

Welllllll, what the heck do I have in this pile of stuff?
Mac G5 2x2.0GHz, 2.5GB RAM, 1TB of internal drives, OSX v10.4.6
Emagic AMT8 MIDI interface
MOTU 828mkII FW
Korg M1
Roland JV1010
Roland GI-20 guitar-MIDI thing

Behringer Truth B2031A monitors
Mackie Control Universal (motorized faders are SPOOKY)
Shure SM57 mic
AKG C1000S mic
CAD E200 mic
Sony MDR-V900 headphones
Some Teleo modules from MakingThings for my increeeedibly stupid guitar-controlled Lynxmotion robot arm! (Roland-ready strat -> Roland GI20 -> MaxMSP patch -> Teleo servo controller module -> Lynxmotion robot arm)
ummm, guitar stuff:
Line6 Vetta II
Echoplex Digital Pro looping thingy (Andre LaFosse = genius, check out http://www.altruistmusic.com/)
some misc pedals, many are off to ebay soon!
Ebow! Fun fun fun, pretending I'm Daniel Ash circa 1985
a bunch of guitars, including:
Roland-ready Strat (GK2A built in to plug into the GI-20)
Line6 Variax 700
Warr 12 string touchguitar
some others
Oh yeah, duh, software!

I don't have Ableton Live yet! I know, I know, it's like a sin or something. Also on the to-get-eventually list, Korg Legacy Collection to get my cheesy M1 sounds in softsynth form.
I think that's about it.

Here's what's now in my "noise" room :
- Gameboys (ye olde grey one + GBA SP) with LSDj most of the time and Nanoloop sometimes
- Various modified speaking and melody-producing toys and small keyboards (mostly of the casio persuasion : SKs, etc.)
- Lots of 'still not modified' electronic toys
- Clavia Micromodular : small, powerful, beautiful
- Palm T3 + Bhajis Loops (well, this one is usually in my pocket)
- Korg MS10, and patch cords a-plenty
- Frostwave FatController MIDI & CV sequencer
- Yamaha SU10 primitive sampler
- Yamaha DX11 when I need a MIDI keyboard (of even for the sounds sometimes)
- Various drum machines (tr626, dr110, RX7, etc.), some will be modified one day when I'll have time for this
- Electric guitar (SG), and an old very badly tuned acoustic guitar
- Applause (ovation) electro-acoustic soprano ukulele
- More basic but still nice acoustic soprano uke
- Artisanal tahitian ukuelele
- Bass V-amp amp simulator (for guitars and ukes mainly)
- Various small acoustic noisemakers : kalimba, jew's harp, xylophones, etc.
- SM57 for the aforementioned noisemakers
- Ibanez AD202 analog delay/flanger/chorus/washing machine
- Weird russian digital delay/sound scrambler (1U rack)
- Guitar pedals (delays, chorus, flanger, overdrives, etc.)
- Sadly, only a small behringer mixer now but I shall buy an Alesis multimix 16 firewire soon
- Small and not very good edirol monitors that should be replaced by real monitors (perhaps KRKs) when I'll have money to spend on this
- Cables everywhere
I work with computers everyday (code, everyday stuff, etc.), so I prefer to use them to record music rather than to make it.
Consequently, it pains me to say this but I'm starting to use my ibook as a host for SooperLooper, as it's far cheaper than buying a few Echoplex Digital Pros. I'll soon buy a FCB1010 to control it without noticing that it's a computer.
That's it, mainly. Ah, and there's also an Edirol UA20 audio/midi interface either for the ibook of for an old P3 laptop, for recording or for SooperLooper.
All this stuff and most of the time I just pluck the strings of my ukes or play with Bhajis Loops these days... |

I don't know if you can really even call mine a 'setup' as it's quite small, but I'm working with the budget of a 15 yr. old, so...
PowerPC iMac G5 1.8GHz 1.5 GB RAM.
Currently using just the line in on the iMac for an interface which gets me by.
Zoom PS-04 portable digital 4-track recorder, using it mainly as a field recorder and also as a preamp for guitar into the line in of the computer.
Mics:
2x ElectroVoice 653A dynamic omni-directional.
One of those RadioShack PZM mics
Condenser mic on the PS-04
Instruments:
Very good Buffet Bb and A clarinets.
Samick AV-6 Les Paul type electric guitar
1967 Giannini Parlor-Sized (I think) classical guitar
Anea bass with PJ EMG pickups.
Software:
Ummmmmmmmmm.
Ableton Live Demo (I need to buy this sometime, but so expensive! ah!)
I'd like to try to learn Pd more.
gleetchLAB is awesome.
Garageband, I guess...but I really don't like it.
EDIT: Forgot to mention the greatness that is alphakanal automat. Thank god this plugin is free.
Yeah, so I don't really know what I need to save up to buy first. I'm thinking a decent audio interface. Then maybe that will come bundled with better software.

My rig:
PowerBook G4
La Cie 250GB HD
A6/2m audio interface
Logic Pro 7.1 (planning to upgrade soon)
GarageBand 3 (for scratch demos and goofing around)
Line6 POD and BassPOD
My beloved Fender Strat and 2 Fender JBasses
I haven't really done much recording in the last year or so. Too busy. But I've dedicated this weekend to it, so I hope to get something done. |

I never use them for percussion, the way I have it set up is like this: I pitch each drum to a note in a scale (bass drum is a C, snare is an E, high-hat is a D, etc), program rhythms with tons of variations, then send MIDI out to either a sound module or Ableton to trigger samples. In Ableton I can use the Scale filter to change keys on the fly. The result is Steve Reich-esque textures (think Six Pianos) as each drum machine is playing a certain rhythm in differing time signature or maybe providing some interesting counterpoint action by playing a contrasting scale (a relative minor, for example).
The SR-16 is just a great programmable sequencer that's dirt cheap... I think I bought my first one about ten years ago for $130 and they've only come down in price since then. |
