Has anybody else noticed how the pace of these forums is decreasing? When it began there used to be a real buzz here and it lasted for a while but now everything seems to have come to a dead stop. What happened!? |

Yeah big time - could be due to slightly less frequent CDM stories this week but I reckon it's more to do with the way CDN 'feels': Although I'm more of a lurker anyway, I personally hesitate to post here unless I have something actually useful to say. I suppose that's why I never post!
Hmm, might just write that Live DJ controller idea post I've been putting off all month... |

Like I've been telling Peter from the start, you NEED an off-topic section/HPC (ala KVR) to get just general buzz going. Hell 80-90% of all post on KVR come from dudes that practically LIVE on that forum. Without that community aspect, our forums are getting about as dead as em411's (and in the past week even more lifeless).
Let's face it, nice folks don't get forums rolling... Troll, flammers, and general @$$clowns do.
That's just my thoughts on it, feel free.... hell PLEASE flame me. I'm sure that it will bring a little more life to CDN.

| I absolutely agree with atomic_afro. Off-topic is where it's at. If this place had a forum where I could post threads with titles such as "funny youtube video! L@@K!" I'd probably have it as my start page. |

Isn't that the point of the General/Chat section though? I know it says there is no off-topic, but I would've thought that's because no particular topic is under discussion...
What this forum needs is one of those Russian Bride bots - they always go down well on the Live forum. Eh I just read that sentence back |

Though I probably wouldn't use an off topic forum myself, I do believe that there is some truth in atomic_afro's statement. I think it'd be a good idea to have an off topic forum. Has Peter expressed any reasons for why we shouldn't have one? I'm shure you have your reasons, Peter; tell us!
Also, what herr_prof said: It's summer. Around my parts, just about everything has grinded to a halt; work, board gaming/role playing with friends, sports, visiting friends etc. Perhaps things around here'll pick up once autumn comes along, and perhaps with a boost from an off topic forum? =) |

He probably thinks that he can avoid bringing in bad mannered trolls like arke, Bones, and Sickle 666 by not having an off-topic forum in place. I mean, as bad as I am with my Mac bashing, my stuff ain't EVEN near what tirades Bones goes off on over at KVR...
In some ways that's a good thing, because stuff's ALOT more civil here. Somehow we got to figure out a balance between dullness (em411) and warzone (KVR).

Sorry guys, but I think you've all got it slightly wrong. Peter has no problem with off-topic conversation. Perhaps he should have labelled the General/Chat forum as "There is no such thing as off-topic here". It's not an admonishment, it's an encouragement! That's why it's in the General Discussion category as well. No need to talk about music. I don't think Peter has ever said that he doesn't want off-topic chat. Our only guideline from the beginning of CDN was to keep the number of forums relatively low, so we wouldn't end up with 20 forums, most of which were empty.
... And I was just thinking that you're all a bunch of antisocial buggers! I shall change the forum description to be slightly clearer, if you all promise to start flaming each other.

Ha!! As usual, my abstract and dry humor gets misunderstood.
I'll also say, the basic problem here is that I just don't have time to run the publishing end of things and the forum, though I wish I did. I've been crazy busy and haven't been properly reading forum RSS, either. Given that we have such a fantastic community here, I think what we need primarily from moderators is *starting* discussion, rather than stopping it. (On high-traffic sites, of course, you need moderators to be traffic police, but here we need them to be chatty and controversial as they like -- yep, that's you, ATA, troll away! Not that you're as troll-like as you claim.)
So I welcome any volunteers. If anyone wants to have their user status elevated, we should be able to do that, too.
I'm all for gradual growth -- I don't expect this to be KVR, and I don't think we even want it to be (KVR does that just fine). But you're right: it's stalled, irrespective of CDM posts I think (CDM readership is up while the forums are down), and we do need to get it rolling again. I'll do anything I can.
Flame, off-topic-chat, ask dumb questions, and chatter away! You have my official blessing.
