The Pipettes - We Are The Pipettes, esp. Judy and Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me. I grabbed a lot of funky stuff recently but keep coming back to this.
Mansun: Six. Actually this is probably my most listened-to album all year... it just compels you (me) to keep listening, and I always have to start at track 1.
Weather Report: Live & Unreleased Disc 2. Stunning - the most accessible yet gratifying Weather Report I've heard. |

| Cool! I've been listening to Status by Frank Bretschneider and Ralf Steinbruchel. |

| Weather report has some great moments and elements, but as much as I want to totally rock out to them, they've got a serious cheese problem. Like, it's all going great, them WHAM! totally cheesy lite-rock/jazz riff. Kills the moment. |

Been listening to a TON of hip-hop these days. All that Def-Jux/Chocolate Industries/Stones Throw kind of stuff. Oh yea, and Belanova!

I've been listening to Funkadelic all day, mostly the Funkadelic album, a bit of Maggot Brain and now Cosmic Slop. I have to say it is keeping me coming back - I expected it to be more wierd and experimental (i.e. less accessible) but it's more just consistent grooves allowed to play themselves out without getting boring at all really, and a really tasteful palette of great guitar/organ playing, stunning vocalists & vocal comping/almost choral arrangements.
It's just one of those pools of music that will sit in the background but rewards careful listening too - and much of the time there's this feeling that it could suddenly change to rock. I don't know why, maybe that's just me.
I still haven't checked out any of the stuff mentioned above - not very progressive of me I know! I'll write a post-it or something.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Michaeluna, re: your cheese comment - I have the blessing/curse of having a high cheese tolerance! It means I enjoy a lot of stuff but am usually taken a bit less seriously by my peers - I will confess my secret love, here and now, for Spyro Gyra (and I'm sure there's worse). Flame/ridicule me as you will... |

| I have to also confess to a last-minute buying of Mancini's Greatest Hits a while back, just to have some coverage of easy listening in my DJ collection. I still haven't familiarised myself properly... so I have gone with 'Theme from Hatari' followed by 'Baby Elephant Walk' - A nice changeup from psychadelic funk! |

| I've just moved on to Jerry Goldsmith's Love Theme From Chinatown. As you can see I'm in a lush strings mood at the moment. Themes that have just a hint of mystery. Man, those guys could really write back then. Do I really need to unleash Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings upon my soul tonight? Oh boy... |

Wow. You people are well adjusted aesthetes all I've been listening to Nine Inch Nails almost exclusively for the past 48 hours. Some of Hybrid's new album I Choose Noise has been rocking me out, but it's much darker than I expected given the tracks prereleased in the I Choose Noise EP. It's definitely growing on me, but I was initially a little disappointed. |

Nine Inch Nails for me as well, The Fragile album at the moment. Trent is (a) god. =)
Oh, and Chicks on Speed. You can't beat a title like "The Floating Pyramid Over Frankfurt That The Taxi Driver Saw When He Was Landing." |

Hang on - are Chicks on Speed that German rocker band? I think I wrote their name down ages ago and lost it, if they are who they think I are they're great!
The only NIN song I really know is... Only, which I love. What's a good album to get into him? |

Today I'll be listening to: the new Christina Aguilera album (I think the hip-hop stuff is weak but the big band tracks on the second disc are really well done), Terry Riley's The Harp of New Albion (the perfect counterpoint to big band!), Ride's Nowhere (because I remember the beauty of the early 90s), and that old Source Material comp (just to round it all out). |

<edit: just realised the dude reference could be short-sighted of me>
That's Aphex Twin isn't it? Do you mean the NIN remixes? I more so meant NIN studio albums cos Reznor seems to be such a studio guy.
I was wondering what the rest of Christina's stuff would be like - don't think I could bring myself to pay cash for it though, I just hate the sound of her voice so much, so very much... however Ain't No Other Man is her best since Genie in a Bottle imho. There's a vocal-only mix on iTunes if you're into remixing
Also to answer my own question Chicks On Speed are indeed German and to my ears are more electroclash than rockers. But nice rocky electroclash with ring modulators and the like. Sounds great on my crappy pc speakers!

Those Aphex tracks aren't actually remixes, they're just original Aphex songs that he handed in for the Further Down The Spiral album (as I hear he does quite often).
I think Alan Moulder and Trent Reznor have produced some amazing stuff together, but I really can't get into NIN just because of the lyrical quality. The instrumental tracks on The Fragile are amazing, but everthing else is marred by these querulous lyrics without any sense of proper grammar.
Made the choice to go away
Drink the fountain of decay
Tear a hole exquisite red
Fuck the rest and stab it dead
Maybe my love of Leonard Cohen has just spoiled me. |

The most recent one "With Teeth" is actually really solid. All of them have some gold though. I wouldn't go so far as to call Trent a "studio guy" though, because the live recordings (and live videos) I've seen have been incredible.
I'm not really a lyrics guy, I tend not to look past the immediate meaning, if that. NIN is of course generally very angsty stuff, so you're going to find lots of rhymes for "hurt" "pain" "die" "dead" etc. Still:
what have i become?
my sweetest friend
everyone i know
goes away in the end
you could have it all
my empire of dirt
i will let you down
i will make you hurt
That really works for me. I'm not sure if I'm quailfied to comment though, I listen to Linkin Park too |
