I can't believe it! I was thinking of buying HL about 2 months back. Boy I would be pissed now had I did.

This sucker is an AKAI, WAV, MP3, SFZ loading pro-quality multi-sampler, plus VSTi host, plus VSTi Freeze tool (for those hosts like FL that don't support native freeze).

Was selling for $99, now $0.

If you're a PC user, consider this your early Christmas gift (sorry mac boys).

Oh did I mention that Highlife has the highest offline resampling quality?

With a pro-quality multi-sampler/freezer it's now really the case that all one needs to buy is a good host (if you like working with trackers, beta software and/or experimental hosts not even that) and you're set for a pro-studio set up.

Over the thnxgivin break I might write up the third part of "straight out of no-cash" around this idea of instant virtual studio, just add host.

Let me know what you guys think...

Oh, and it also has an integrated audio editor w/effects, it can multi-sample your VSTis, and export those samples to .sfz (so sfz+, dimension, dimension pro, and rapture users should really get hyped about this!)

C'mon, do you need any more reasons? What do you want it to do your laundry, cook, and clean your apartment? A freeware sampler can only do so much Wink

Woah, the plot thickens:

http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=158018&start=105&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3644

Apparently, George of DiscoDSP released Highlife as freeware without the consent of the original coder, Arguru. He was so pissed that he released ALL of the other DiscoDSP synths as freeware on his own site (I'm not going to bother to post the link because it's down already.)

In any case, JBM has taken upon himself to post his links to phantom and discovery on the cockos (Reaper) forum.

Now, this isn't cracks here. This is the plug-in coder releasing synths which he partially owns in response to his partner's similar freeware release of Highlife.

Messy indeed, I would have posted about this sooner, but I only found out about this stuff during my lunch break at work today (the power was out last night during the height of the drama).

The funny thing is, I was just about to buy Discovery with my own money as part of a DiscoDSP group buy... I got paid and I was going to do it tonight...

But I'm looking at the download, and I'm debating as to whether or not it's ethical to install it, and forget paying for it. It's not some third-party crack, but from one of the dudes that owns it that put it out there.

I'm curious as to what the CDM community's views on this ordeal is, especially since most of you are far removed from the internal politics of KVR. Is it morally correct to download freeware that was released during a feud between former business partners? Is it the same as downloading a cracked copy of the same software, or is it fair considering it was given out freely by at least half of the party responsible for its creation.

George, Arguru, JBM, if in the unlikely chance you guys belong to this forum, I invite you to speak your peace on the issue as to inform us on your views.

A full write up on the drama will happen this weekend... or whenever the battle dies down. I do plan on emailing the major players to give them a chance to post their response on CDM.

Damn forget TNT, VST knows drama Wink

This appears to be George's final word on the issue. He and Arguru have worked out a settlement, and thus from now on the ONLY legal place to get the non-freeware DiscoDSP products is from purchasing them on the official site.

Still don't know if I'm going to buy Discovery however, this whole mess has kinda put a bad taste in my mouth.... hmmm.

It's all a bit of a car crash really, only george and arguru know all the facts yet the kvr posse have piled in with an argument from every conceivable angle...

It's an interesting moral question though, some are even debating whether you should use Highlife because the motives behind it's freeware release. I think you have to take a step back, if you want the software then use it; it's been released by it's developers without force or cohersion, their reasons are immaterial.

Maybe it would be more immoral to use it if you were already thinking of buying it than if you just chanced upon it due to the events of the last few days..? Discuss.

Very Happy
